I love Japanese food, especially they are good and cheap. My Japanese friend recommended Sumida to me. The price on the ala-carte menu is slightly on the high side but it has some quite value for money set lunch menu starting from RM12 to RM25 per set.
I had the Torikatsu Don (fried bread crumbed chicken) at RM12 per set lunch while Amanda had Yakemeshi & Gyoza (fried dumplings) set lunch at RM14. The taste is not bad and very well presented. Each set lunch usually comes with rice, Miso soup, pickle vege and Jelly or fruit dessert.
Green Tea (hot or cold) is available at no extra charge, great! but there is a 10% service charge. No govt tax for now.
The ambience is quie nice. it has both tatami and normal seating but usually the tatami seating is always taken up. It also has a sushi bar atthe back but I rare see people seating there. Owned by a Malaysia-japanese couple but the Japanese husband (who is also the cook) recently passed away.
Quite a popular place to eat for the Japanese community in Penang, so I guess the food must be quite authentic to what they get in Japan. Service is OK. Only the owner Malaysian wife and a waiter on the floor.
